Vascular Ultrasound Q & A

What is a vascular ultrasound?

A vascular ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of your circulatory system, including the blood vessels in your legs, extracranial arteries, and renal arteries. It’s a safe and painless procedure that allows your physician to evaluate your vascular health and identify conditions like arteriosclerosis and blood clots.

Why would I need a vascular ultrasound?

The team at Alexander Kasatkin MD PC uses vascular ultrasounds to diagnose the cause of pain or swelling in your legs as well as fainting. They also:

  • Monitor how blood moves through your body
  • Locate vascular blockages and other abnormalities
  • Identify blood clots
  • Determine if you have an aneurysm
  • Determine if you’re a good candidate for angioplasty
  • Evaluate the success of a bypass procedure

The team also uses vascular ultrasounds to guide catheterization procedures.

How should I prepare for a vascular ultrasound?

In most cases, you don’t need to do anything special to prepare for a vascular ultrasound. You can eat and drink normally and should wear loose, comfortable clothing.

If you’re having a catheterization procedure with a vascular ultrasound, your physician gives you specific instructions to prepare for your procedure.

What happens during a vascular ultrasound?

A vascular ultrasound usually takes 30-40 minutes. You might need to wear a gown during the procedure.

The technician begins by smoothing a clear gel onto your skin, which helps transmit the sound waves through your skin. Then, they glide a handheld transducer over your skin that sends the sound waves into your body and collects the echoes. The transducer sends the echo data to the ultrasound machine, which creates the images and videos of your arteries and veins.

Your physician studies the images and videos, looking for abnormalities and other signs of vascular health problems.

What happens if the vascular ultrasound reveals a problem?

The team at Alexander Kasatkin MD PC offers comprehensive treatment plans to address vascular health problems. Depending on your condition, your doctor might recommend lifestyle modifications to your diet and exercise habits, medication, or procedures to open your arteries to improve circulation in your extremities.
